What You Should Know About Hip Replacement Surgery

As we age, our bodies and joints get weak, and it can be painful to do activities that once were easy for us. For many, experiencing joint pain can be nearly unbearable, and so they turn to hip replacement, seeking to alleviate their discomfort.

If you suffer from chronic joint pain in your hips, it might be time to consider hip replacement surgery. Check out these insights we think you should know before undergoing the procedure:

  1. Hip replacement is not for everyone: Good candidates for hip replacement surgery are those who suffer from osteoarthritis, bone tumors, and osteonecrosis. Someone who suffers from Parkinson’s disease or another degenerative muscle disease would not be a good candidate for the surgery.
  2. The procedure will take between 1 and 2 hours: By making an incision through the hip muscle, your surgeon can take out damaged cartilage and bone tissue. Prosthetic parts are cemented onto your bone in order to allow for a range of movement.
  3. There are risks: Ninety-eight percent of hip replacements go well, but in two percent of procedures, blood clots have occurred in the legs or pelvic region. With monitoring and care, your recovery should go very well, putting you on the path to a healthy hip.
  4. You can have a speedy recovery: The stitches from your procedures will be scheduled to be removed only two weeks after surgery. If you’re careful about not getting the stitches wet and give yourself time to rest, your recovery will be much quicker.

There is no reason to go about life in pain. At MK Orthopaedics, we are dedicated to improving your quality of life. With specialists experienced in hip and knee replacement, our surgeons are your best chance at a healthy, functioning set of knees or hips.

Lower Back Pain Bothering You?

Do you have lower back pain? Do you have trouble getting comfortable sitting or laying down? There are a few great ways you can keep your back strong so you are comfortable. Exercise is always a great place to start! Below are a few good exercises to reduce your back pain.

  • Strengthening exercises: Your focus should be on your back, stomach, and leg muscles
  • Aerobic exercise helps you to condition your heart and other muscles, maintain health, and speed recovery
  • Stretching exercises allow you  to keep your muscles and other supporting tissues flexible while lowing your chance of injury

Here are some exercises that can aggravate your back:

  • Lifting heavy weights above the waist (standing military press or bicep curls)
  • Straight leg sit-ups
  • Bent leg sit-ups or partial sit-ups (curl-ups) when you have acute back pain
  • Le Lifts: Lift both legs while lying on your back
