  • Common Causes of Rotator Cuff Injuries

Tendons are connective tissues that surround your joints, and the rotator cuff is a large tendon that connects four muscles at the top of your arm. The rotator cuff helps your body lift and rotate your arm where it connects to your shoulder joint. A damaged rotator cuff is a common source of shoulder pain .

    Causes of Rotator Cuff Injuries

There are two primary types of rotator cuff tears: acute and degenerative injuries. Common causes of acute rotator cuff damage include falling on an outstretched arm, sports injury, and lifting something that’s too heavy. More frequent than acute tears, degenerative injuries result from a wearing down of the tendon over time. Putting repetitive stress on the shoulder, for example throwing a baseball or weightlifting, can contribute to rotator cuff tears. Other factors that may cause degenerative wear can include reduced blood supply due to age, which can reduce the tendon’s ability to heal itself; and bone spurs, which can weaken the tendon and make it more likely to tear.

    Symptoms of Rotator Cuff Injuries

Individuals who have suffered a torn rotator cuff will typically experience pain in their shoulder while at rest, especially if putting pressure on the joint. Other symptoms can include pain and weakness when lifting the arm, difficulty lowering or rotating the arm, and a crackling feeling when moving the arm. Acute injuries are more likely to cause intense pain, while degenerative tears typically cause mild pain early on, which increases over time.

    Treatments for Rotator Cuff Injuries

When left untreated, a torn rotator cuff can worsen with use. If you experience sudden or chronic shoulder pain, you should see a doctor for examination. Conservative treatments for rotator cuff injuries include rest, modified activity, anti-inflammatory medication, and physical therapy. If these treatments fail, steroid injections or surgery may be recommended.

  • How Excess Weight Affect Your Joints

Excess weight is associated with a broad range of conditions that can include heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, but did you know that your joints can also be affected by those extra pounds? Orthopaedic doctors recommend maintaining a healthy weight to preserve the health of your joints.

    Joints and Movement

Joints are places in your body where two bones meet. Healthy joints help you to bend, twist, and turn freely due to a thin layer of cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones. This cartilage provides a smooth surface that distributes weight evenly and allows your bones to move without friction. However, each joint is designed to endure only a certain level of stress. Excess weight can negatively affect the function of your joints.

    Weight and Joints

Each pound of extra weight that your body carries can place added strain on your joints. Over time, being overweight can lead to many health problems, including arthritis. The extra pressure that’s put on the cartilage of your joints can become worn down and damaged, leading to feelings of pain and stiffness. The connecting tissues around your joints, called tendons, can also be affected by excess weight by becoming inflamed. A third joint condition that can result from being overweight is bursitis. The fluid-filled sack that adds cushioning to your joint, called a bursa, can become painful and swollen due to the added pressure of excess weight.

    Damaged Joints and Treatments

In some cases, patients may be able to prevent further damage to their joints through weight loss. Other conservative treatments for joint pain caused by excess weight include rest, ice application, and over-the-counter pain medications. In severe cases, the joint may need to be replaced. Knee and hip replacement surgery are both common treatments for badly damaged joints.

If you’re suffering from joint pain or back pain, an orthopaedic doctor in Joliet may be able to help. The orthopaedic surgeons at MK Orthopaedics treat a variety of conditions that can affect the function of your joints. Call us today at (815) 741-6900 to learn more about our services.
