• Three Ways You Can Prepare for Your Meniscectomy

A meniscectomy is a surgical procedure to repair a meniscus tear. The orthopaedic surgeon may remove part or all of the meniscus, which is a section of cartilage in the knee joint. Meniscus tears can cause considerable knee pain, swelling, and reduced range of motion. They are a common type of sports injury that may result from contact sports or abrupt changes in movement. If your orthopaedic doctor recommends that you undergo a meniscectomy, there are some steps you can take to prepare.

    Consult an Orthopaedic Surgeon

If you decide to have a meniscectomy , your orthopaedic surgeon will need to know about all of the medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Disclose your other medical conditions, including your allergies, and discuss whether you’ve previously had surgery. You might meet with an anesthesiologist, who will need to know if you’ve previously had anesthesia and whether you experienced adverse reactions to it. During your consultation with the orthopaedic surgeon, you should also ask any questions you may have about the procedure, such as questions about potential complications. You may be asked to undergo a medical exam, blood tests, and imaging scans.

    Follow the Pre-Operative Instructions

Your orthopaedic surgeon will give you pre-operative instructions to follow. You may be asked to discontinue certain medications, vitamins, and supplements. If you smoke, you may be asked to quit. Smoking inhibits the healing process and can increase the risk of complications. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the evening before your surgery. This includes coffee and water. Consuming anything after midnight can result in serious complications of the anesthesia.

    Plan Your Recovery

Before your surgery, you should arrange to take some time off work to recover. Your orthopaedic surgeon will let you know when you can return to your usual activities. You will need someone to drive you to and from the surgery center. Someone will need to stay with you for a few days to help you out around the home and take you to physical therapy appointments.
