• Boosting Patient Comfort with Open MRIs

An open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is a type of diagnostic imaging test that does not require the patient to be enclosed within the equipment. This means that the approach is particularly ideal for patients with claustrophobia. Open MRI scans take images the same way as conventional MRI scans. The test uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to generate internal images of the body. An orthopaedic doctor may request an MRI test if you have been experiencing musculoskeletal symptoms such as joint pain and swelling in the extremities.

Before having the test, the orthopaedic doctor will ask that you remove all metallic objects such as jewelry and hearing aids. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Then, you’ll lie comfortably on an open exam table while the equipment generates images. MRI exams are painless.

To improve the comfort of our patients, MK Orthopaedics is pleased to offer open MRI exams . If you’ve sustained a sports injury, you can schedule an appointment with an orthopaedic doctor in Shorewood, New Lenox, or Joliet by calling (815) 741-6900.
